Finding Programs

We met with Laura to find out what her expectations were for the children's programs sponsered by the many generous donors in memeory of Tyler. She is looking for "hands-on" workshops in order to create the same childhood memories of the library that her children have. Also, it is important to offer programs for pre-schoolers all the way through six grade.

We decided to name the program "Tyler's Time" and launch the series in January. We will have programs in both January and February but then will schedule events only once each quarter. During the months of Summer Reading, Tyler's Time will host an event for the entire family such as an Author Visit.

The search for "hands-on" workshops was a challange since we maintain a large list of libray performers rather than groups that work with children on various projects. The programs that we are now looking for are usually created by the Youth Services' staff rather than outside groups. I began by making phone calls to any community group I could think of . My call to the La Grange Art League has produced many phone calls from area artists who work with children. The park district was very helpful when they emailed me their list of contacts. After researching the many museums in the Chicago area I have found wonderful outreach programs. So, this project has opened my eyes to the many program opportunities I never knew existed.
